Moldova has dispatched its highest economic and security officials to Kyiv to address immediate trade needs and long-term alliance building. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Monday, October 26, for a working visit focused on bilateral relations and regional stability.
Tofan is accompanied by three cabinet members: Vladimir Bolea, the minister of infrastructure and regional development; Anatolie Nosatîi, the defense minister; and Dorin Junghietu, the energy minister. The Moldovan government stated that this delegation structure reflects the dual focus of the trip on both economic cooperation and security matters.
The agenda includes meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. Tofan and Koretskyi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on strengthening trade ties and advancing both nations' paths toward the European Union. They will also participate together in the Kyiv International Economic Forum, an event dedicated to investment opportunities and economic development.
Energy security is a central component of the visit. On October 12, Tofan stated that Moldova is considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to meet domestic demand. He indicated that this specific issue would be a priority during his current trip. A preliminary discussion on this topic took place on October 14, when Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan. Their conversation covered winter preparations and common challenges in the energy sector.
The timing of these discussions coincides with recent statements from Moldovan President Maia Sandu. She confirmed that Moldova is prepared to accept a new influx of refugees from Ukraine should the humanitarian situation deteriorate further. Her remarks addressed the country's readiness to handle potential departures from its eastern neighbor.
The visit comes as both countries seek to deepen economic integration while managing the security implications of the ongoing conflict in the region. The presence of the defense and energy ministers in the delegation underscores the practical nature of the negotiations, moving beyond diplomatic greetings to specific operational and financial planning.
